Blood Transfusion Service needs donations

The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) is in need of 2 000 donations before the end of January 2020 to bolster its blood supply.
Its Manager for Donor Recruitment and Public Relations, Zita Tobin in a media statement on Wednesday said the increased demand for blood products and fewer donations have affected blood stock levels in the entire country, leaving NamBTS with only two days’ supply of blood type O.
Tobin said the drop in donations was caused by the break time between Christmas, New Year and the school-year commencing, by many regular donors.
“Currently, there is a shortage of group O blood type. A healthy level should be six days and higher and we are on two days for group O which is totally inadequate,” she said.
This has resulted in rationing of group O positive and O negative blood types to hospitals. Stock levels of blood groups A, B and AB are however still sufficient.
“We are appealing to the public to donate blood, especially blood group O donors. The only way to give patients access to this precious life-saving resource is through the selfless act of blood donation,” she said.
