NBC board chairperson announces cost cutting measures

The board chairperson of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Sven Thieme on Monday announced various measures to cut cost as the broadcaster has been struggling financially in recent times.
"If the funding level cannot be improved to ensure that it is commensurate with planned spending, it would be prudent to consider the liquidation of the NBC.
During a media conference on Monday Thieme said the funding situation at the NBC has reached critical levels where liabilities continuously rise and efforts to contain them are unsustainable.
Thieme revealed various steps such as the cancellation of the daily indigenous news bulletins on TV, reduction of live broadcast hours for both radio and television, cancellation of channels as well as a moratorium on the broadcasting of live events unless they are fully paid by the initiator.
The staff complement and agreements with staff might also be affected.
Staff travel from duty stations will also be limited and all foreign trips will be suspended unless fully paid for by an agency requesting it.
He said the board is forced to take the action as they do not want to fall foul of the law and that they had consultation with the Government regarding the austerity measures.
"We had legal counsel," as well he said.
