Parliament lauches Namibia Branch of CWP.

Parliament has launched the Namibia Branch of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, CWP.
The CWP has a mission to increase women's representation in decision-making positions, by sensitizing people and political parties in the country.
The National Council Chairman and Co-President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Asser Kapere, inaugurated the branch in Windhoek today(tue).
Kapere said Namibia is signatory to many laws, inlcuding the SADC Declaration on Gender and Development calling for 30 percent of women's representation in policy-making positions by 2005.
The SADC Protocol on Gender and Development calls for 50/50 representation by 2015.
Kapere said currently there are only 24 percent of women in the National Assembly, a decrease from 26 percent from 2004 elections.
He emphasized on the need for more efforts towards women empowerment, for Namibia to emulate countries like Rwanda, whose parliament exceeded the target by recording 56-comma-three percent women in the House.
Kapere feels that women empowerment brings social vitality, political stability and economic growth.
The CWP Namibia Branch consists of seven members, with Ohangwena Councillor Ruth Nhinda as Chairperson and the National Assembly MP, Lucia Witbooi, as
Vice-Chairperson.
Nhinda encouraged more women to be involved in decision-making at the local level and elect women to positions of power in their communities and political parties.
