President Hifikepunye Pohamba has opened the cultural festival at the University of Namibia, organised to coincide with the official celebration of the 20-th anniversary of the institution.

President Pohamba wants Unam in celebrating its 20 years of existence to do re-trospectiion and gear itself towards becoming a university of choice in Africa.

To do that, the Head of State said, Unam need to address issues such as accomodation for students, increase the number of its lecture halls and acquire modern equipment at all its campuses.

The President also urged the university to improve its quality of teaching and ensure it offers courses relevant to the development needs of Namibia.

The Namibian leader called for the introduction and improvement of extra-mural activities to make student live more rewarding and enable Unam to produce well rounded graduates who could compete internationally.

He was satisfied with the Unam choir, saying apart from singing, it was also exposing students to a different way of life.

The cultural festival is taking place at the main campus in Windhoek and the opening was attended by Founding President, Sam Nujoma and the first Vice Chancellor of Unam, Professor Peter Katjavivi.
