Sport Commission dismisses allegations of not supporting Boxing

The Namibia Sports Commission's Chief Administrator, Freddy Mwiya, has dismissed allegations that his organisation has not given financial assistance to Boxing for the past couple of years.
Mwiya was responding to the Namibia Boxing Federation President's remarks, which he made during NBC's Covid 19 vs sport show, which dealt with Boxing.
In their quest to establish the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on different sport codes, producers of NBC's weekly show Covid-19 vs Sport were informed that Boxing federations have not been getting financial support for the past couple of years.
According to Namibia Boxing Federation President Benjamin Rabang, the situation has created a difficult status quo, as they do not know how to best assist their affiliates in this time.
“Namibia Boxing Federation never received money from the government and from the Sport Commission. All this three year. The bulk of the assistance for our federations come from coaches or administrators at the club level, Now that Covid is here it's just difficult, almost impossible for us to do anything, because we have run out of our personal funds” Rabang said,
Despite acknowledging the economic woes in recent years, the Namibia Sports Commission's Chief dismissed the allegations of the boxing federation.
Freddy Mwiya explained that they have been assisting the federations indirectly by paying service providers.
According to Mwiya, the only thing that has actually stopped was to give them cash directly.
“I would like to cite a good example. We spent N$ 700 00 dollars on Amateur Boxers that travel to Morocco for the All Africa Games, is that not support? We also payed 200 thousand for them when we took them to the High Performance Centre in Swakopmund, How do you give an organization money that will not account for that money, but we pay for the services and we engaged the President and the vice president. We gave the money directly to the recipient, because they don't have financial prudency, so we managed them now in terms of finance, so we supporting our affiliates “ Mwiya said.
The Sport Commission urged all sport codes, including boxing, to make sure that they are in good standing.
