Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, both aged 13 died on the spot after the bus they were travelling in left the road and overturned near Mariental on Sunday.
Namibian Police Force Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay, told NAMPA on Sunday that the incident happened at about 09h00 on the B1 national road between Kalkand and Mariental.
“It is alleged that the driver of a white Volvo Sunshine tours bus with registration number N68312W, with 65 school kids from Windhoek Gymnasium Private School on board lost control of the bus and it left the road and overturned killing two kids on spot,” he explained.
The two deceased were trapped in the wreckage and the 'Jaws of life' were used to remove the bodies, he said, while the rest of the kids suffered injuries ranging from slight to serious and were rushed to Mariental State Hospital for treatment.
The names of the deceased teenagers are known but cannot be revealed as their next of kin have not yet been informed of their deaths.
The 33-year-old bus driver tested positive for alcohol and was arrested.
A culpable homicide case was opened and police investigations continue.
