The Deputy Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare has launched the Food Bank programme for Khorixas residents in the Kunene Region.
At the programme's launch yesterday, reverend Aino Kapewangolo said it showed the Government's commitment to fighting hunger and poverty head-on.
She said it is possible to wipe out hunger and poverty through the government social grants, and the roll-out of programmes like the Food Bank to households identified as needy.
The Food Bank was first launched by President Hage Geingob in the capital two years ago, and it has since been distributing food parcels to identified households in the Khomas Region.
It now operates in Hardap, //Karas, Kavango East and Kavango West.
The deputy minister launched the programme on the sidelines of a week-long training of seven street committee members, who will be distributing food parcels to beneficiaries in their community.
Khorixas Mayor Elizabeth Geises said youth unemployment, drought and human-wildlife conflict have fuelled hunger and poverty at the town and in surrounding areas.
She called on the committee members sincerely serve the programme, the Government and their community members.
