Founding President Sam Nujoma’s birthday celebration on 12 May has been cancelled in order to aid efforts to curb the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).
A media statement availed to NAMPA on Friday by Senior Special Assistant in the Office of the Founding President, Paul Shipale, said given that elderly people are said to be more vulnerable to COVID-19, the birthday celebration will be cancelled to avoid a mass public gathering and to adhere to the State of Emergency regulations.
“In view of the above, anyone with a congratulatory message and good wishes is hereby encouraged to send them to the office in order to reduce the impact and spread of COVID-19,” reads the statement.
Nujoma was born on 12 May 1929 in Ongandjera in northern Namibia and served as Namibia's founding president from 1990 until 2005.
