Ipinge elected as new secretary of Swapo Party Women's Council

The seventh Swapo Party Women's Council Congress has elected Eunice Ipinge as its new Secretary.
Fransina Kahungu was elected deputy secretary.
Counting and verification took over 16 hours before Attorney-General Sacky Shanghala declared the two candidates duly elected on Saturday.
Though regretting the long wait, Shanghala dismissed any talk of officials possibly having rigged the elections, when he announced the results to tired and frustrated congress participants.
Just under 600 delegates participated in the vote to elect the Women's Council leadership for the next five years.
After the top two female positions, the next most votes went to: Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana and Clara Bohitile.
The congress also elected 37 members to complete the 53-member SWAPO Central Committee.
The secretary and deputy secretary and all 14 Women's Council regional coordinators, automatically qualify as SWAPO Central Committee members.
Some former Central Committee members who did not gather enough votes to remain were: Bernadette Jagger, Lucia Basson, Margaret Mensah-Williams and Maureen Hinda.
The Swapo Party Women's Council Congress was held in Keetmanshoop from Wednesday to Saturday last week under the theme 'Embracing 50/50 for prosperity beyond generations.'
