A Gobabis resident who in April 2016 was found guilty of hacking his girlfriend to death with a panga in 2012, has been sent to jail for an effective 35 years.
Thirty five year-old Joel Petrus appeared before High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka on a charge of murder with direct intent to kill on Monday.
His case was dealt with as per the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act of 2003 in respect of Maria Erastus' death.
Court dockets showed that the deceased person suffered several life-threatening stab wounds on her body, after Petrus attacked her with a panga over a suspicious text message on her phone.
Judge Siboleka, in handing down judgement, noted that Petrus had not apologised to the family of the deceased for the loss of life.
In his view, the deceased person was a vulnerable member of the society and a long prison sentence would be an appropriate punishment.
In his mitigation plea, Petrus asked the court for a lenient punishment, but stated that he did not intend to kill her and that he regrets his actions.
Petrus, who is a first-time offender, is a single father of three children who live with their mothers.
