Judges visit correctional facility

A Team of high court judges visited the Windhoek Central Correctional Facility on Thursday.
The visit by the Judicial Service Commission members is aimed at familiarising themselves with the operations, challenges, good practices and shortcomings at the facility.
Judges Sylvester Mainga, Dina Usiku and Christie Liebenberg toured the correctional centre, and spoke to inmates about their treatment, health and the food they receive.
Some prisoners complained about the lack of proper and adequate medical attention, an unbalanced diet and lack of communication facilities.
The Windhoek correctional facility has 968 inmates convicted for different offences.
Judge Mainga told NBC News that the visit, which is the first of its kind, is part of the commission's constitutional requirements and they will tour other facilities across the country.
