The Khorixas Town Council will be imposing stiffer fines for illegal sand mining inside the boundaries of the town.
This follows incidents reports to the council of illegal sand mining activities over the past weekend.
Chief executive officer, Andreas Howoseb says sand harvesting without the consent of the council is illegal and anyone found gathering sand without approval will be charged an extra N$800 on top of the council tariffs for sand mining.
Howoseb, thus strongly advises residents not to gather sand for any purpose without a permit from the town council.
He says council usually investigates reports of such incidents from the public, and upon completion, it takes action based on the findings of such probes.
The CEO noted that sand mining damages the environment, stressing the importance of informing people about the importance sand plays in the environment.
The council will thus engage the community on the importance of sand and the dangers that uncontrolled sand mining has on the environment.
