A 36-year-old man from Omaalala Village in the Oshana Region died on the spot on Tuesday after a mob of angry residents allegedly attacked him because they suspected him of breaking into a residence at the Othingo Village near Oshakati.
Confirming the alleged killing, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo of the Namibian Police's (NAMPOL) Community Affairs Office in the region said the incident took place at around 00h00.
“The deceased was assaulted by members of the public with dry and fresh palm tree sticks after he was suspected of breaking into a residence at the village and stole various items,” stated Aiyambo.
Aiyambo added that some of the stolen items were recovered earlier and during the assault of the deceased.
He said the Oshakati Police have since opened a murder case in connection with the incident and investigations are ongoing to determine prime suspects in the matter.
The police have also withheld the identity of the deceased as his next of kin are yet to be informed of his death.
