Ndeitunga calls for law against sharing of accident pictures

The Inspector-General of the Namibian Police is calling on lawmakers to consider introducing a law prohibiting sharing of pictures of accident scenes.
Sebastian Ndeitunga says such a law would contribute to the overall aim of reducing road crashes in the country.
According to Ndeitunga, the sharing of sometimes unverified and gruesome pictures from accident scenes is not only insensitive towards affected families but also interferes with police investigations.
The police chief further appealed for stiffer sentences for drivers contravening traffic laws.
Cases such as culpable homicide should be changed to murder and punished appropriately, Ndeitunga said.
Since 22 November, 44 persons have died on Namibian roads while 340 injuries have been reported.
