Namibia's Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO) has issued a statement meant to address several reports by the media, regarding Namibian students in China.
Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah began by confirming that there are currently 500 Namibians studying in China, 27 who live in Wuhan, the epicentre of the current Coronavirus outbreak.
To date, the ministry says no Namibian student has been infected with COVID-19, and the country's embassy in Beijing is working closely with the Hubei Provincial Government, to monitor the situation.
Regarding students' restricted movement outside the university campus, Nandi-Ndaitwah says those measures apply to all, regardless of nationality, and are enforced especially in light of the high demand and lack of availability of face masks.
Meanwhile, Namibia has established a National Contingent Committee on the Coronavirus Response'in order to effectively respond to any eventuality.
Responding to calls for mass evacuations of foreign nationals from China, the minister says Namibia, as a member of the World Health Organisation, is expected to abide by set guidelines from that body, which at this stage is not recommending such.
