The Governor of the Ohangwena Region is raising funds to build a decent shelter for learners of Oshamukweni Combined School in the Okongo Constituency. These learners avoid making a daily commute of about 26 kilometres to and from school by residing in makeshift structures on the school premises.
Governor Walde Ndevashiya visited the school after the harsh conditions under which the learners were forced to live appeared on social media.
The school is situated some 35 kilometres east of Okongo and enrols more than 300 learners from pre-primary level up to Grade 9.
At least 50 of the learners decided to erect makeshift structures in which to sleep on the school premises, after travelling long distances daily to and from school for a while.
Governor Ndevashiya and officials from the Ohangwena Directorate of Education met the school management recently and informed them that some private companies had pledged to build decent structures for the learners.
They said that there had been plans in the pipeline to build a hostel at the school, which were put on hold due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic 11 months ago, and its impact on the economy.
