More than 3 000 Namibians are learning to speak Chinese at the University of Namibia's (UNAM) Chinese Confucius Institute.
The Institute's Director, Fan Zhang, has told NBC News that the programme began as a collaboration between the Institute, UNAM and the China University of Geo-Sciences six years ago.
He says the institute serves mostly as a bridge between China and Namibia, bringing the two-cultures together.
Dr Fan says apart from Chinese, learning more languages for any person is significant in the modern world.
Students have noted that learning Chinese offers advantages both in the local tourism industry, and in a variety of interactions at the world stage.
David Tjivara, who works as a tour guide, says learning to speak Chinese would help him communicate better with Chinese tourists.
