President Hage Geingob has confirmed his preferred candidates, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for vice presidency, Sophia Shaningwa as the Secretary-General to be deputised by Marco Hausiku.
The confirmation was done at the opening of the Politburo meeting.
The Head of State says he was informed by extensive consultations with Founding President Sam Nujoma, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba as well as other party members.
Sources within the party told NBC News that majority of the 24-member Politburo supported the announcement of the candidates while some felt more time and consultations are needed.
President Geingob, as the chairman, then postponed the nominations to give other members a chance to research and nominate their candidates.
Political analyst, Hoze Riruako says this development shows Swapo's maturity.
He says, "This is a very interesting development. It is actually a sign of growth and democracy in the party. Many times, when you deal with African politics, a head of state or person in charge would take a decision and everybody would follow that decision. The situation here was very open and everybody has their chance to air their views around the nomination issue.
