Popular Movement for Democracy (PDM) president McHenry Venaani has slammed the Rundu Town Council as insensitive to the plight of the poor at the town.
Venaani visited the site along Cuma Road, where a group calling themselves landless Rundu residents have been camping for over a week now.
He challenged the town council to come out of the shadows and address the issue to avoid the illegal occupation of land.
The official opposition leader noted that he was not in support of illegal land occupation, but authorities should not turn a blind eye to the question of urban land delivery.
Venaani said he will be advocating for free urban land for poor Namibians at the second national land conference in October so that every citizen can have a place to call home.
The police had to be called in last week at hundreds of residents swarmed a piece of land south of Rundu to demarcate plots for themselves without the town council permission.
The group has since erected tents at the site, refusing to vacate it until town council addressed their plight.
The Rundu Town Council insists it has a list of land applicants which it will follow, saying land allocation procedures shall apply.
