Suspect arrested in Swakopmund after woman dies in shack blaze

A 39-year-old man was arrested at around 03h00 on Monday in Swakopmund’s Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) for allegedly burning down his ex-girlfriend's shack, in which one of the six occupants, 28-year-old Elrizza Byl, burned to death.
Erongo Crime Investigations Coordinator, Erastus Ikuyu said the suspect, who also sustained serious injuries to the hands, arms and his head, was admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital under police guard.
The suspect is in a stable condition.
Among the shack’s occupants were two South African nationals.
According to the police, the suspect went to knock at his ex-girlfriend’s door and when she refused to open he set the shack on fire.
The suspect’s ex-girlfriend alleges that he threated to kill her before the incident.
All the belongings in the shack were destroyed in the blaze.
