SWAPO MP in the National Council, Petrus Kavhura, is calling for amendments to the State Finance Act, to give the Auditor General the right to take action against institutions found to be mismanaging State funds.
Contributing to the debate on the Appropriation Amendment Bill, Kavhura said the Act should be amended to ensure that those mismanaging funds should be held accountable.
The Kavango East Regional Councillor said an audit opinion has proven not to be enough as institutions continue under the same path even if given a negative audit opinion.
Therefore, he urged Finance Minister Calle Schlettwein to amend the bill appropriately and close the loophole by bringing guilty parties to book.
Countries around the world, including Kenya and South Africa, have improved the legislation to allow the Auditor General take action on mismanagement and corruption practices of State funds.
Currently, the Auditor General is mandated to investigate, examine and audit the account books, accounts and statements.
