Telio telephone system to be launched for offenders

The Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) under the Ministry of Safety and Security is set to launch a Telio telephone system that will allow inmates to make phone calls to their families and friends when they need to.
The launch is slated for Wednesday, 21 August at the Windhoek Correctional Facility.
A statement issued by NCS Commissioner-General Raphael Amunyela said the Telio Offender Telephone System is a freely installed system from which offenders can make pre-paid telephone calls to relatives and friends, which will also assist in reducing the government telephone bill of offenders’ calls.
“It is one of Namibian Correctional Service rehabilitative initiatives introduced as an important contribution to institutional peace and social reintegration,” said Amunyela.
According to the commissioner, the system worldwide has proven not only effective in reducing the government telephone bill but goes a long way in reducing security incidents in correctional facilities.
