Environment and Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta says leniency by some environmentalists and traditional leaders towards the protection of the environment could result in the destruction of the eco-system in some areas.
Shifeta was reacting to recent shocking reports of sand mining in northern Namibia,
He says this is because the authorities are not imposing environmental protection laws.
The minister says environmentalists in Government and traditional authorities can face criminal charges for failing to prevent damage to the environment.
