National Youth Council (NYC) Executive Chairperson Mandela Kapere says there is no need for new legislation for youth development.
Kapere is not pleased that Government is reportedly discussing new youth development legislation called the youth act.
He noted that Government has not come to the NYC to discuss the act and he fails to understand what necessitated it or why it's a big priority
The leader stressed that the Sport, Youth and National Service Ministry instead needs to collaborate with NYC to solve problems and provide resources for the youth.
Kapere wants to see 40% representation of youth in parliament and local authorities.
According to him it is not good enough for parliament to only have one young person between the ages of 18 and 35 and the NYC needs to provide leadership to turn the situation around.
Kapere was speaking at the NYC fifth representative council in Swakopmund recently.
The gathering is a platform to reflect on the previous year and advance challenges of young people in various youth organisations.
Forty-nine affiliate member organisations and 14 regional youth forums were represented at the meeting.
