It will not be business as usual post COVID-19 - Tjongarero

The Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Agnes Tjongarero said her team has discovered many loopholes in the sport act as well as the constitutions of various sport codes, which will have to been changed in line with new realities caused by COVID-19.
Agnes Tjongarero said with sport being one of the hardest hit sector by COVID-19, they did not rest on their laurels as sports administrators as they had ample time to reflect on their assignments in their respective roles.
“During this period we have learnt many things we have seen loopholes. Even some of Constitutions of some sport codes will change that it can tell you it will changed” said Tjongarero.
The sports minister also singled out a clause in the sports act which stipulates that there should be a fund which was caters for situations such as COVID-19. The implementation of the blue print however seems to be a challenge.
“Although it is there on paper it was never implemented. That’s one, there are many other things which we have realised that we could have done better. I hope post COVID-19 all those things rectified” she added.
The ministry together with the Namibia Sports Commission and the Namibia National Olympic Committee will host a Post COVID planning meeting in due course to map out the way forward for sport in the country.
In the meantime, Tjongarero urged athletes not to lose hope despite the circumstances, and stay focused.
